gay·F·fect is a free review of gay books, art, and culture. We work to promote awareness and acceptance of literary and artistic works by gay authors and artists—and about gay themes—focusing on the gay male experience.
We know what it is like to live in a world we fear won’t accept us, both a straight world (because we are gay) and a gay world (because we aren’t the folk in Queer as Folk). We also know what it is like to read hundreds of books desperately searching for one that captures these experiences—and the joy that comes in finding one that welcomes us into its world even when the real world doesn’t.
gay adj. 1. (of a person) Feeling romantic and/or sexual attraction towards members of the same sex or gender. 2. (of a thing) Intended for gay people, especially gay men.
effect n. 1. The result or outcome of a cause. 2. An impression left on the mind.
affect n. 1. (obsolete) A mood or inclination. 2. (obsolete) A desire or appetite.
While our focus is the gay male experience, we stand with all LGBTQ people, all nationalities, ethnicities, and creeds in the fight against discrimination and injustice. The ongoing epidemics of police violence against African-Americans, hate crimes against LGBTQ people, and the brutal and dystopian federal response to protests in Portland and elsewhere serve to remind us that much remains to be done to ensure that black and queer lives really do matter.
